A prequel

Brian and I flew to Istanbul this morning for a day away. After arriving at the airport on the Asian side of Istanbul at 7:20am we took a bus to the European side. Then we walked some, stopped for a coffee, and then hopped on another bus. When that bus reached it's final stop we walked some more...finally arriving at our hotel about 4 hours after our initial arrival in Istanbul. These pictures were all taken during our trek from the airport to our hotel.

Byzantine Ruins

Side of a building

Ottoman houses...

Looking for the correct bus!

I took lots more pictures, but this is all I have time for now. More later!

Please explain "Ottoman" house. Is it an architectural style? They can obviously be new or old.

I'm wondering why you had to get on so many buses just to get to your hotel?

Love the pictures of the Ruins and the wall. They tell a story, don't they?

anon - yes it is an architectural style of building. both of these were old houses...probably from the 1800's...one of them had been restored.

nikki - well this is turkey. and istanbul is huge! most people have to take at least two types of transportation to get anywhere in the city...and there are multiple routes to everywhere. we could have taken a bus to the water, a ferry across the bosphorus strait...from asia to europe, and then taken a bus. we still would have had to walk though. our hotel is close to public transportation, but not exactly on the route. it is an adventure to say the least!

witty - i know. i loved those as well. there are ruins all over this city. and they are just like that...out in the open. and i loved the wall. the fact that they used whatever kinds of materials they could find...even old pieces of roman columns...to build their houses just fascinates me.

I have been meaning to ask you, where do you live in Turkey. I thought Istanbul but now I realize that you don't. Love the pictures.

cathy - we live in ankara. it is northwest of the center of the country if you look at a map.

I thought that's where you live. I just knew from your other pictures that it had to be either Istanbul or Ankara. My boyfriend's extended family live in Istanbul.
