an idea

I've joked around about walking half a mile to the grocery store on facebook. We really do that.

The other day the whole family walked to a Chinese food restaurant in the same shopping complex as the grocery store and then went grocery shopping afterwards. The kids didn't think much of it. They are used to walking to the store. Nevermind that nobody else does it around here.

Then today I was running an errand and passed by this.

Can you see it?

Here's a closer look.

Evidently we aren't the only ones walking to the grocery store. At least we don't push the cart full of groceries to our house after we check out. Not that I haven't thought about it. I just didn't figure my neighbors would appreciate seeing a woman with a grocery cart walking down the street. Hm...maybe I should reconsider...

And yeah I totally turned my car around and went back to take a picture of that grocery cart.

Walking to the grocery store isn't as much of a problem as getting the groceries home. The groceries are too heavy/many to carry and they will melt/spoil. So far those are the only excuses I've needed. But you're so inspiring, maybe someday I'll breakdown and try it!

I would love to walk to the grocery store! I like the idea of seeing a random grocery cart out somewhere.

I'm so glad you commented on my blog! Looks like you guys have had some changes in your life, too! Welcome back to the states!

It looks like you had plenty of folks to help carry the groceries!

My grandma used to have us walk to the store for her, but she had her own folding cart. I used to feel so silly walking that thing to the store when I was 13!

I would turn around too. Certain neighborhoods in our city have more shopping carts than cars.

mamadallama - yeah i agree with you! i can carry two bags easily. probably more, but i wouldn't like it! and summertime in texas is hot so i won't be buying anything that is refrigerated at all!

lost in splendor - i enjoy it. we've walked to a restaurant, the grocery store, a convenience store, a pharmacy, and a frozen custard place. it's nice!

chrissy - me too! i am glad to hear you guys are doing well in alaska!

momo fali - we did! and we bought several bags worth too. usually only 2 of us go at a time so we never buy more than 4 bags worth of stuff. i want to get one of those carts for days that i might need it. i might even buy a little cooler to put in the bottom for cold stuff!

jason - it was very out of place in my neighborhood. not that it's that nice of a neighborhood or anything, but to travel past the entrance down several streets was something for sure!

I am with you on this-- our primary grocery store is, I'd guess, a quarter mile away (which isn't even really worth measuring), so we walk there all the time. Because we go so often, we don't need to worry about having too much to carry.

Only twice now, in two years, have I had to take the cart the two blocks to our house, and I assure you, it's somehow an excruciating experience. Louder than you'd imagine, and you can feel the stares. But whaddya gonna do?

So hang in there, and don't let the American car obsession make you drive anywhere you'd be embarrassed to tell a European about. ("But the mailbox is like TWO HUNDRED feet away!!")
